Grownup preparation & supervision
An adult chooses the plant and growing medium, reads all seed and product instructions, prepares drainage and handles any cutting. Keep seeds, soil and tools away from mouths. Stay with the child and wash hands afterward.
Gather before you begin
- One stable pot with drainage and a catch tray
- A seed packet suitable for your site and season
- Growing medium appropriate to that plant
- A small scoop and watering container
- Paper, pencil and an adult-selected plant label
Make a little time together
- Read the packet together. Copy the planting depth, spacing and light requirements; do not substitute a generic planting rule.
- Place the pot on its tray at a stable, accessible work surface. An adult checks where drainage water will go.
- Have the adult prepare the medium and demonstrate the scoop before inviting one child to help.
- Plant according to the packet. Label the pot with the variety and date, then record what the pot looks like today.
One thing to notice
What changed since the previous observation? A dated drawing is useful even when nothing has sprouted.
Finish & put away
Return spare seed and tools to adult storage, wipe the work surface, empty runoff as needed and wash hands. Check the pot regularly according to the chosen plant’s needs.
