Grownup preparation & supervision

An adult remains within reach, controls the water supply and checks the surface for slipping. Use only a manageable amount of water; never leave filled containers available after play.

Gather before you begin

  • A stable tray on a non-slip surface
  • Two large, unbreakable containers
  • A small watering can
  • A cloth for drips

Make a little time together

  1. An adult sets the containers in a tray and adds a small, manageable amount of water to one.
  2. Demonstrate holding the can close to the receiving container and stopping between pours.
  3. Invite a short pour, then pause to look at the water level. Keep the pace flexible.
  4. If the child moves on, end the activity and empty the containers immediately.

One thing to notice

Did holding the spout nearer the container change where the water went?

Finish & put away

Empty all water, wipe and dry the area, clean the can as instructed and return everything to adult storage.
