Grownup preparation & supervision
Adults inspect tools for damage, handle sharp or metal edges and apply any cleaning products. Children should not handle chemicals or damaged tools. Follow each product’s instructions and supervise throughout.
Gather before you begin
- Tools with their current care instructions
- A cloth and a clean drying surface
- An adult-controlled storage container
- Paper labels or an inventory sheet
Make a little time together
- Lay out the tools while an adult checks for cracks, loose parts or damage. Remove damaged pieces from use.
- Read the care instructions. Separate tools that can be washed from pieces needing different care.
- An adult cleans as instructed; place suitable items on a drying surface without trapping moisture in a closed tote.
- Count the pieces and make a simple inventory. Store dry items where children cannot access them unsupervised.
One thing to notice
Is there a tool that needs a different storage place? Note it on the inventory rather than forcing everything into one bag.
Finish & put away
Clean the drying area, wash hands and store cleaning supplies separately. The adult checks that all tools and water are put away.
