Grownup preparation & supervision

Keep seeds in the packet and out of reach during this planning activity. An adult checks that the plant and all instructions suit the intended setting. No tasting or seed handling is needed.

Gather before you begin

  • One seed packet selected by an adult
  • Paper and a pencil
  • A ruler for the drawing
  • The pot or bed measurements, recorded by an adult

Make a little time together

  1. Keep the packet closed while an adult reads it. On paper, make separate lines for variety, planting depth with its unit, spacing with its unit, light and suggested sowing conditions. Copy only what this packet provides; mark any missing field to check rather than inventing a universal rule.
  2. Draw the intended container or bed. Write its real dimensions and units beside it, then compare them with the packet instructions. A sketch alone does not show how many plants the container can support; ask a reliable growing source if the packet leaves that unresolved.
  3. Make separate lists for things already available and things to obtain. A toy gardening set does not automatically include growing supplies.
  4. Choose the next task together: checking the light, finding a pot or collecting the correct growing medium.

One thing to notice

Which instruction changed your original plan? Record questions rather than guessing.

Finish & put away

Put the packet in adult storage. Keep the paper plan with your tools so the next session starts with a clear list.

Activity status

Original editorial plan, published October 22, 2026; reviewed October 26, 2026. Preparation time is an estimate; it is not the duration of play or a growing-time promise. Adults should adapt or stop the activity as needed.

Background & further reading

For growing instructions, start with your actual seed packet. KidsGardening’s Germination Exploration explains using seed-packet guidance; its published lesson is separate from this original plan.
